Details on the Rio Grande Flooding at Contrabando

Back to Rio Grande flooding

On Oct. 11, 2008,  (almost precisely one month after the flooding of the Rio Grande began),   with the water level down,  this little adobe building received some damage to the interior.    The water level had been about 2 feet high inside the little movie casa during the flooding, and the blocks have almost completely dissolved on one complete side, and half of the adoining sides along the bottom 2 feet of the walls,  leaving a surreal appearance that the blocks above are floating.    Note that the blocks are completely gone (at the level about base of the window).   There are no blocks underneath the remaining higher part of the adobe walls to give support  except for just about an inch or less of remaining adobe mud still sticking to the exterior stucco.    I was told by Tx Parks ranger, Rod Trevizo,  that they intend to do the repairs in that building.   Just hope they do it before it collapses.
